How to Request a Registrant Identification Number

What is a Registrant Identification Number?

A Registrant Identification Number, also known as a RIN, is a number assigned to a business by Service Ontario. A business needs a RIN when they are registering a vehicle in Ontario to get a vehicle permit, licence plate and licence plate sticker.

How do I apply for a RIN and register a business vehicle?

To request a registrant identification number and register a vehicle for your business, you will need to take the following information to a Service Ontario location:

  • Proof of your business registration and registered business address:

    • For corporations: Articles of Incorporation

    • For partnerships: Business Name Registration

  • Two pieces of official business mail that contains the business name and registered business address, such as Canada Revenue Agency mail, utility bills or lease agreements

  • A sworn statement signed by a notary that confirms the person purchasing and registering the vehicle has the authority to so on behalf of the business

Your car dealership may also be able to send these documents to Service Ontario to request a RIN and vehicle registration on behalf of your business.

How do I create a sworn statement to register a business vehicle?

The sworn statement must include the following information: 

  • Business name

  • Type of business (partnership or corporation)

  • Registered business address

  • Business telephone

  • Full legal name of the person signing the document

  • Position of the person signing the document (e.g., company director, president, etc.)

  • A statement confirming the person signing the document has the authority to bind the business

Who needs to sign a sworn statement to register a business vehicle?

The sworn statement must be signed by someone who has signing authority on behalf of the business:

  • For corporations: a director of the company

  • For a partnership: a partner with signing authority

The sworn statement must be signed in the presence of a notary and then notarized (i.e., signed and stamped by the notary).
